   Campus TV Capacity Expansion

TV channel expansion is the addition of new program choices for viewers. TV channels can be added to a television system by increasing the frequency range of the network. This allows more channels to be simultaneously transmitted to the viewer.

Over the past 20 years, the frequency range of TV systems has increased from 330 MHz, to 550 MHz to its present range of more than 860 MHz. Increasing the frequency of the system involves changing the types of communication lines, splitters, amplifiers, and receivers (TVs and STBs) that are used in the system.

Why do we want more channel capacity? So we can provide more programming choices to our viewers. There are new television networks, each one boasting new television programs, while existing television programs such as Discovery Channel are splitting into specialized programs. Many school television systems can only offer 50 to 100 channels, while cable TV systems are offering up to 1000 channels. The availability of more channels by cable and satellite broadcasters is putting pressure on schools to add more channels to their television program lineups.
