Campus Television System - Campus TV

Campus television systems gather programs from various sources, organize them into channels, distribute them through various communication systems on school campuses, and allow students and staff members to select and view the programs on one or more types of viewing devices.

Campus TV systems include contribution networks, headend and media management systems, distribution systems, and viewing devices. A contribution network gathers programming from multiple sources such as local cable networks, satellite feeds, and local program sources. The headend system rebroadcasts or manages (playout) the content via an asset management system. A distribution network transfers the media throughout the campus enabling it to be displayed on a mix of viewing devices (TVs, or PCs).

This figure shows that the campus TV system gathers content from a variety of sources including network feeds, stored media, communication links and live studio sources. The headend converts the media source into a form that can be managed and distributed. The asset management system stores, moves and sends out (playout) the media at scheduled times. The distribution system transfers multiple channels to users who are connected to the TV system on a ring that goes around the campus. Buildings on campuses are connected to the rings at distribution hubs through access lines. Users view TV programming on televisions that are directly connected to the cable lines (cable ready TVs) or through adapter boxes (set top boxes).
